Why Your AC Is Blowing Warm Air

By Coolstream Heating & AirPublished Updated

The short answer

Warm air from the vents can point to airflow issues, thermostat problems, or a refrigerant concern that needs quick attention.

Check the controls and airflow safely

Confirm that the thermostat is set to cool and that its target is below the room temperature. Look at the filter and make sure return grilles are clear. Note whether the outdoor unit appears to run, but do not open its cabinet or touch wiring.

Know when warm air needs a diagnosis

Warm air may involve a control issue, restricted airflow, a dirty coil, or a refrigerant problem. These causes cannot be distinguished reliably from vent temperature alone. Stop cooling if ice appears or the system makes unusual mechanical noises. A burning smell or repeated breaker trip calls for prompt professional attention.
