The Real Cost of Ignoring Refrigerant Leaks

By Coolstream Heating & AirPublished Updated

The short answer

A refrigerant leak is not just a comfort issue. It can hurt performance, drive up energy use, and lead to bigger repairs.

Refrigerant is not a routine consumable

A sealed cooling circuit should not require regular topping up. If charge is low, a qualified technician should evaluate why and discuss leak testing and repair. Adding refrigerant without addressing an identified leak can leave the underlying problem unresolved.

Ask for the diagnosis in writing

Request the refrigerant type, test findings, repair options, and any warranty coverage. Continued poor cooling can increase operating time and stress equipment. Never use a do-it-yourself charging kit on central AC or mix refrigerants; the system requires appropriate tools and qualified handling.
