Why a Dirty Coil Can Raise Your Cooling Costs

By Coolstream Heating & AirPublished Updated

The short answer

Dirty coils make it harder for your AC to move heat out of the house. That extra work shows up in comfort and energy use.

Why coil condition matters

The indoor coil absorbs heat and the outdoor coil releases it. Dirt can interfere with that transfer and force longer operating time. A blocked filter, debris around the outdoor unit, or a dirty blower may accompany the coil problem and should be considered together.

Use an equipment-appropriate cleaning method

Keep loose debris away from the outdoor unit while maintaining the manufacturer clearance. Leave chemical cleaning, electrical access, and delicate coil work to a qualified service provider. A pressure washer can damage fins; the correct process depends on the equipment and its condition.
