What to Do When Your AC Stops After Hours

By Coolstream Heating & AirPublished Updated

The short answer

When the AC quits at night, you need a clear plan. Here are the first checks to make before calling for emergency help.

Start with a safe observation

Check the thermostat mode, display, and accessible filter. Note any error message and whether the problem affects the whole home. If there is smoke, a burning smell, flooding, or visible electrical damage, keep clear and obtain appropriate emergency help.

Make the service call useful

Tell the dispatcher the symptoms, address, and whether vulnerable occupants need a cooler place while waiting. Confirm after-hours availability and any diagnostic fee before the visit. Do not open electrical panels, bypass a safety switch, or repeatedly reset a tripping breaker.
