Repair or Replace? How to Make the Right Call

By Coolstream Heating & AirPublished Updated

The short answer

When an AC starts getting expensive to keep alive, this simple checklist helps you compare repair cost against replacement value.

Compare the repair with the whole system

Start with a written diagnosis and repair estimate. Then consider equipment age, repair history, warranty coverage, corrosion, and whether the home is comfortable between breakdowns. One failed part does not automatically justify replacement; repeated major failures may change the calculation.

Ask for a like-for-like replacement estimate

A replacement proposal should describe indoor and outdoor equipment, sizing, duct changes, electrical work, permits, and warranty terms. Compare the total installed scope with the repair option. Savings depend on actual usage and installation quality, so be cautious about a guaranteed payback claim without supporting calculations.
