How Humidity Affects Your Air Conditioner

By Coolstream Heating & AirPublished Updated

The short answer

Florida humidity makes your AC work harder. Understanding the balance between moisture and cooling can improve comfort fast.

Cooling also removes moisture

As warm indoor air passes across a cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses and drains away. If the equipment runs in very short bursts, the house may reach its temperature target without feeling dry. Air leaks and moisture from cooking or showers can add to the load.

Measure before changing equipment

Use a humidity monitor away from supply vents and exterior doors. Check several rooms over a few days. Persistent dampness needs investigation of drainage, airflow, air leakage, and system operation. A dehumidifier can be appropriate, but it should not conceal a leak or unresolved AC fault.
