Humidity & Comfort
Why Is My Palm Coast House Humid When the AC Is Running?
The short answer
A cool house can still feel damp. Measure indoor humidity, then check moisture sources, air leaks, drainage, and cooling cycle length before assuming you need a bigger AC.
Start with a humidity reading
Place a humidity monitor in an occupied room away from supply vents, showers, and exterior doors. Take readings at different times instead of relying on a single number. EPA guidance recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally 30% to 50% where possible. A persistent pattern matters more than a short spike after cooking or a shower.
Why cold air does not always mean a dry home
Air conditioning removes water as indoor air passes over the evaporator coil. Short cycles may reduce the opportunity to remove moisture. Air entering through leaks, frequent door openings, and moisture-producing activities can also make the house feel clammy. Running a larger system is not automatically the solution; sizing and controls need to match the home.
Check the source before buying an accessory
Look for plumbing leaks, water staining, and a history of condensate overflow. Use exhaust ventilation when cooking or showering and avoid leaving exterior doors open while cooling. Ask the technician to evaluate airflow, drainage, run cycles, and the building conditions. A dehumidifier may help a specific need, but it should not hide a water leak.
Keep a simple comfort log
For a few days, record indoor temperature, humidity, thermostat settings, and the rooms that feel damp. Share the log during your visit. If you have visible moisture damage or persistent musty odors, describe those separately so the cause is investigated. Cleaning a vent or replacing a filter alone does not establish that a moisture problem is resolved.
